Real Madrid vs. Athletic Bilbao

Two matches into the 2013/14 Spanish La Liga season and a couple of clubs have had a good start so far. Teams like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Real Madrid and Villarreal have won their first two opening games. Over the weekend, one of these clubs will surely have their win streak end as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid takes on Athletic Bilbao in a battle to keep their winning ways alive.

Real Madrid has won against Real Betis (2-1) and against Granada (1-0) which is currently good for 5th place. Whereas Athletic Club has won against Real Vallodolid (2-1) and against Osasuna (2-0) which is currently good for 3rd place in the Primera Division.

It will definitely be an interesting matchup when Athletic Bilbao visits last year’s runner up in the La Liga Championship. This year, Athletic Bilbao looks to have a better season than last season wherein they finished at the bottom part of the league standings. They will have to go against a very persistent Real Madrid who seeks nothing less than winning a title this year.

Real Madrid has a couple of players going through some rigorous training like Sami Khedira who obtained a knee injury in their match against Betis, and Asier Illarramendi who has already worked out with his teammates in order to recover from his groin strain injury which he acquired in July. Raphael Varane is in a day to day status with his meniscus injury that he has had since last season, and Xabi Alonso could possibly be out until mid November as he is still undergoing surgery on his broken toe.

Over at the Athletic Bilbao side of things, only three players could possibly make or miss the weekend matchup as Gorka Irairoz Moreno (thigh injury), Borja Ekizo (leg injury), and Mikel San Jose (ankle injury) are all not expected to have long term injuries as they could potentially be a few days away from a possible recovery.

Both clubs look to come out with a win and keep their streak alive and it’s all up in the air when kick off starts over the weekend, as Real Madrid takes on the charging Athletic Bilbao.
