Changes in Chelsea’s Midfield

It is very interesting that manager Jose Mourinho had let go more players than the number of players he acquired. It is also interesting that the players involved in the transfers are all midfielders. What’s certain is that the “Chosen One” has been in these waters before and knows what he’s doing. Here are the players that were involved in some of those moves.

Juan Mata signs with Manchester United
Being regarded as the biggest transfer in this month’s Transfer Window, Juan Mata made a record-breaking fee with Manchester United when he signed a €45 million contract that would run until 2018. The former two time player of the year for Chelsea hasn’t been seeing his usual minutes when new Boss, Jose Mourinho, took charge at the Stamford Bridge. This had sparked the reason on why Mata wanted to leave Chelsea. He also wanted to have regular minutes so that he could have a spot at Spain’s team in the FIFA World Cup in June. On United’s side of things, they were lacking the intensity in the midfield which is why Mata is perfect for the role.

Mohamed Salah completes his move to Chelsea
The Egyptian international has completed a move to Chelsea and has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the club. Even though Juan Mata left the club, Chelsea has no worries as they have bagged another talented player in the form of Salah. The attack minded midfielder had shown what he is capable of, when his former club Basel faced Chelsea in the group stages of the current Champions League and in the previous Europa League. According to Chelsea’s official website Salah has stated upon his signing that “’I’m very happy to sign for Chelsea, such a big club in the world. I hope I can make the Chelsea supporters happy and have a good career at the club for many years to come.”

Kevin De Bruyne has traded Chelsea for Wolfsburg
The 22-year old Belgian attacking midfielder has officially inked his contract with the German side via VfL Wolfsburg. Sporting Director Klaus Allofs and manager Dieter Hecking were persistent on getting De Bruyne. Even though he was denied in the summer, the deal has finally been agreed upon and both parties are happy with the result. Manager Deiter Hecking has commented about the youngster that “He brings us something we don’t have in quite that form in terms of his pace, directness and ability to resolve one-on-one situations.”

AC Milan has acquired the services of Mickael Essien
After an eight-and-a-half year spell at Chelsea, Mickael Essien has now signed with AC Milan on undisclosed terms. Like Juan Mata, the Ghanaian midfielder had seen limited minutes in the current campaign which has provoked him to join the Italian side. Chelsea Manager, Jose Mourinho, stated “To show Michael respect is to not stop him going. We would have been happy had he stayed because he is fantastic player for the team, but he’s given everything for the club and a great chance arrived for his future.”Essien is now the third signing of AC Milan in the winter transfer window.
