Injury updates on some of Europe’s finest footballers

In the recent weeks of football action, there are a number of players that are eyeing a return to the pitch, and there are also some who are going to the sidelines due to injuries. It is impossible to predict who, how, or when an injury will take place, and even big name players are not immune from injuries. Here are updates on the injuries of some of those big name players in Europe.

David Villa (Hamstring/Strain – Mid February)
In the 39th minute of the fixture between Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad, David Villa went off the pitch due to a suspected hamstring injury. Medical reports have confirmed that Villa suffered an elongation of the femoral biceps of his left thigh. Early assessments has stated that Villa might be back in about 10 days making him miss their next fixture in La Liga, and their Copa del Rey match against Real Madrid.

Edinson Cavani (Thigh Injury – Mid March)
It is a huge blow for Paris Saint-Germain as their Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani is set to miss their Champions League match against Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen. Cavani suffered a thigh injury in their match against Bordeaux and is expected to be on the sidelines for at least three weeks. If things do not go PSG’s way, the worst case scenario is the injury could hold back Cavani up to six weeks.

Gareth Bale (Calf Injury – Historical)
Gareth Bale had already missed two matches for Real Madrid since sustaining a calf injury. According to the club’s official website, the Welshman will return to action for Los Blancos in their Copa del Rey match against Atletico Madrid. Bale was also seen present during Madrid’s training session and is expected to be fit for the next clash. This will definitely give Madrid a boost as their main man, Cristiano Ronaldo, is still waiting on a confirmation of a three or one match suspension for the Whites.

Rio Ferdinand (Knee Injury – Back in training)
Being in an injury-riddled season, Manager David Moyes is looking forward on having Rio Ferdinand back from injury. The 35-year old center back has made only one appearance in the Premiere league since September, which started speculations that younger players are being favored instead of him because of his age. Manager David Moyes has denied those allegations, and stated that he still wants to use Ferdinand. According to Moyes, “Rio is back training, he’s back and we will continue to use Rio at the right times and the right moments. Rio has made a great contribution, especially in the first half of the season. I played him in nearly all the opening eight to ten games. He was a big part in helping me to settle. He has competition at center-half but he is very much valued and looked at as one of the senior players.”
