It is opening day for the 2014/15 Champions League season on the 16th and 17th of September as we have the top European clubs battling it out to show who is the best football club on the continent. Once again, the Champions League will be showcasing the best of the best, with players like Cristiano Ronaldo of Spain’s La Liga, MesutOzil of England’s Premier League, and Hulk of Russia’s Premier League, have a chance to fight it out for Europe’s top prize.
With all the excitement about this year’s Champions League, there are, however, some players who will be anxiously watching from the sidelines due to injury. Here are some notable players who will be missing the Champions League opener:
Hulk (Thigh Injury – Mid October 2014)
Zenit St. Petersburg’s Hulk will be missing the Russian club’s first two UEFA Champions League matches due to a thigh injury that he sustained early this September. The Brazilian star might be out until mid October due to this injury that he got as Zenit was about to seal the 1-0 victory against FC Lokomotiv Moskva. So far in the Russian League, Hulk has been able to rack up 5 goals, as Zenit will definitely miss the firepower that their star forward can provide. Zenit St. Petersburg will be facing Portugal’s Benfica as the Portuguese club look to take advantage of Hulk’s unavailability.
Arturo Vidal (Thigh Injury – Early October 2014)
Italy’s Old Lady will also be missing the services of Arturo Vidal who is also out with a thigh injury that he has recently sustained. The Chilean was confirmed to be injured after his international duty with his country, in which he played 90 full minutes. At first, the South American midfielder was denying his injury saying that he is 100% injury-free but it turns out that after a medical examination, it was not at all true as Juventus now fears that he could be out until early October.
Daniel Sturridge (Thigh Injury – Early October 2014)
The Liverpool striker picked up an injury during England’s international friendly match against Norway. It is another case of the thigh injury, as the Englishman is expected to return around early October. Sturridge now faces a race against time to be fit as quickly as he can, so he can help out the up and coming Liverpool squad which is currently in 5th place in the Premier League. It is most likely that he will be replaced by newly acquired and former AC Milan forward, Mario Balotelli, when they face Bulgarian club, Ludogorets.
