All of the major leagues are done, and just a couple more days and the biggest event in football is here. The FIFA World Cup will begin in a few weeks and this is what the players have been preparing for during this period. The only thing to worry about is if the players called up could stay fit until the competition begins and possibly get their country the ultimate prize. Let’s take a look at some of the top players that are currently on the sidelines and see how they are doing so far.
Luis Suarez (Meniscus Injury – Mid June 2014)
The Uruguayan community felt a huge blow once the news broke out that their main man Luis Suarez was set to take surgery before the World Cup. Luis Suarez had an operation on his knee last Thursday and with his recovery scheduled for 15 days to 4 weeks. It is clear that the striker won’t be able to feature in Uruguay’s opener against Costa Rica, but it is believed that Suarez is targeting to be fit in time for their second group match against England led by his teammate Steven Gerrard.
Gareth Bale (Leg Injury – Few Weeks)
The former Tottenham Hot Spur had a remarkable first season with his new employers Real Madrid. In just his first season, Bale has won two trophies in the Copa Del Rey and the coveted Champions League in which he scored the deciding goals in both games. Unfortunately for the star Welshman, he will be nursing a leg injury for the first part of his off season. Bale was called up to be part of the team that would face Netherlands in a friendly for their send off before the World Cup. But a statement came from the Football Association of Wales stating “Gareth Bale has withdrawn from the Welsh squad to travel to Amsterdam to face the Netherlands in a friendly international next week.”
Matias Fernandez (Ankle Injury – Mid June 2014)
The Chile national team has been having a hard time as injuries plague them at the worst possible time. It has been confirmed that the team would already be missing Fiorentina’s Matias Fernandez due to an ankle injury. Fernandez had already taken his ankle surgery and it is reported that he could return to physical activities within four weeks. Fernandez is also scheduled to start his rehabilitation by sticking to running for a few days which would gradually resume to a more physical regime to get him fit in time for the next season.
Robin van Persie (Knee Injury – Back in Training)
Some good news for the Dutch international team as their main gunner Robin van Persie is believed that he is getting closer to his top form. Van Persie has been nursing a knee injury since their crucial win in the Champions League with Manchester United against Olympiakos. In their next friendly against Ghana, Netherlands manager Louis Van Gaal would see if van Persie could already perform in a full match and still has one last friendly against Wales until they open their campaign for the World Cup against defending champions Spain.
